Amazon Acquires Fauna Robotics
Amazon has confirmed its acquisition of Fauna Robotics, a New York-based startup founded by former Meta and Google engineers, which develops social robotics software. Their product, Sprout, is a 42-inch bipedal humanoid robot priced at $50,000 for research partners, designed for social interaction and not for manual labor. This move is part of Amazon’s shift toward a software-first robotics strategy, following past failures in hardware with the Astro home robot.
Fauna Robotics secured at least $30 million in funding from significant investors before Amazon’s undisclosed acquisition deal. Early customers include Disney and Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics. In contrast, Tesla’s Optimus robot focuses on labor and is projected to be produced at a rate of 1 million units per year by summer 2027, with a price point around $20,000.
This acquisition positions Amazon in a different market for social robotics, leveraging its existing ecosystems with Alexa and Prime, potentially impacting its relationship with over 200 million Prime members.
