Amazon Performance Update
Amazon’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares have underperformed compared to the S&P 500 index, gaining only 2.5% over the last three months while the benchmark index increased by 3.9% through July 31. Despite this, Amazon maintains a leading market share in cloud computing, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) holding 28% of the market and generating significant revenue.
In the second quarter, AWS reported a 36.8% year-over-year sales increase, amounting to $42.2 billion, alongside a 63.6% rise in operating income to $16.6 billion. However, investor concerns about management’s increased capital expenditures projected at $220 billion for the year have contributed to the stock’s recent lag. Over the past year, Amazon’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has decreased from 35 to 22, positioning the stock as a potentially attractive investment relative to its historical performance and the S&P 500’s P/E ratio of 29.
