The introduction of the Mobile Training Centre marks a significant milestone for the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC) and Finning Canada. This pioneering 44-foot trailer is designed to house four simulators, each with its own operator training program. The simulators cater to a range of heavy equipment, including articulated trucks, dozers, loaders, and excavators. Moreover, plans are underway for the development of an additional program to further enrich the learning experience.

Within the confines of the Red Chris mine, situated in the Tahltan Nation’s traditional territory, the Mobile Training Centre is poised to provide unparalleled flexibility by facilitating relocation to alternative sites based on operational requirements. Its central objective revolves around the steadfast support of both the Tahltan HEO program and the TNDC Employee HEO training program.

Colleen Cashin, the Vice President of People and Corporate Culture at TNDC, articulated the vision behind the innovative initiative, stating, “The vision for the TNDC Mobile Training Centre will be to build capacity for Tahltans, our employees, and to improve career growth opportunities. It is through partnerships with organizations like Finning that we are able to facilitate the growth of our people and the ongoing development of our corporation.”

With an ambitious agenda, the TNDC Mobile Training Centre aims to impart training to 80-120 staff members annually. This initiative equips them with upskilling opportunities and provides training for new operators, underscoring its commitment to fostering skill development and growth. Furthermore, the Centre plays a pivotal role in supporting the onboarding of new employees, enhancing employee retention, and boosting productivity, while simultaneously driving down recruitment and onboarding expenses.

Emphasizing the significance of simulator training, Cheryl Gray, the Senior Vice President of Mining at Finning Canada, iterated, “Simulator training provides a safe, hands-on experience for learners using the same controls and machine applications found in real-world worksites. We are excited to support the Tahltans in developing the skills they need to become certified Heavy Equipment Operators.”

The collaborative efforts between the Finning team and TNDC extend beyond the implementation of the equipment to encompass installation, troubleshooting, and the training of Tahltan instructors. Upon commencement of operations, TNDC will be responsible for the seamless operation and maintenance of the trailer, in addition to running all the training programs.
