Amazon’s Performance and Future Investments
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares have decreased by approximately 7% in early 2026, underperforming compared to the S&P 500, which has remained roughly flat. Despite this decline, Amazon reported a fourth-quarter operating income of $25.0 billion, up from $21.2 billion a year earlier, while net sales rose 14% year over year to $213.4 billion.
The company is planning to invest around $200 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, primarily to bolster its cloud computing services and AI capabilities. However, free cash flow has sharply declined from $38.2 billion to $11.2 billion, largely due to a $50.7 billion increase in capital expenditures. Nevertheless, Amazon’s operating cash flow surged by 20% year over year to $139.5 billion for the trailing 12 months, indicating strong business momentum and robust growth in its AWS segment, which saw a revenue growth rate of 24% year over year.
