Waste Management, Inc. Set to Release Q1 Earnings Amid Positive Trends

With a market cap of $92.3 billion, Waste Management, Inc. (WM) delivers environmental solutions to a diverse range of customers including residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal sectors across the United States, Canada, and internationally. Established in 1968 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, WM provides collection services, operates transfer stations, and manages landfill gas-to-energy projects.

Waste Management is scheduled to announce its Q1 earnings on Monday, April 28, after the market closes. Analysts predict a decline in WM’s earnings per share (EPS) by 4%, estimating it will report $1.68 per share, down from $1.75 in the same quarter last year. Over the past four quarters, the company has managed to meet or exceed consensus estimates in three instances, but missed once. In its most recent quarter, WM reported an EPS of $1.70, falling short of the consensus estimate by 5%.

For the fiscal year, analysts forecast that WM will report an EPS of $7.63, reflecting a 5.5% increase from $7.23 in fiscal 2024. Furthermore, looking ahead to 2026, EPS is projected to grow by 13.4% annually, reaching $8.65.

Over the past 52 weeks, WM stock has risen 13.1%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) gain of 5.5% and the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund’s (XLI) returns of 3.3% during the same period.

Post Q4 earnings release on January 29, WM shares dropped by 1.9%. The company reported a 13% growth in revenue, totaling $5.9 billion. Additionally, its income from operations increased by 17% to $919 million, underscored by effective cost optimization and strategic pricing initiatives in the collection and disposal sectors.

The overall consensus for WM stock remains positive, with a “Moderate Buy” recommendation. Out of the 20 analysts evaluating the stock, 10 suggest a “Strong Buy,” one recommends a “Moderate Buy,” and nine advocate for a “Hold” rating. The average target price for WM stands at $244.50, indicating a potential upside of 5.3% from current market levels.
