Apple’s AI Strategy and Potential Acquisitions
Apple’s artificial intelligence (AI) strategy has faced challenges, lagging behind competitors in the AI field. On a fiscal third-quarter conference call on June 28, 2025, CEO Tim Cook indicated the company is open to acquiring an AI firm to accelerate its development, possibly targeting generative AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Perplexity.
Current valuations are high, with OpenAI estimated at $300 billion, Anthropic at $170 billion, and Perplexity at $18 billion. Apple holds over $55 billion in cash and short-term investments, suggesting it could pursue an acquisition. A deal for a company like Perplexity, given its lower valuation, is considered more feasible and could enhance Apple’s competitive position in AI.
Despite AI not yet being a key selling point for Apple, the company reported signs of revenue growth in Q3 2025, marking a potential turnaround. The success of its new strategy hinges on whether it can successfully acquire and integrate an AI company in the near future.
