PrismML Launches Bonsai 27B AI Model for Apple Devices
On July 14, 2023, PrismML, a Caltech-rooted startup, unveiled Bonsai 27B, an AI model that can run locally on Apple devices including the iPhone 17 Pro. The model retains approximately 90% of the performance of its original, larger counterpart while being compressed to 3.9 gigabytes.
This breakthrough addresses previous performance issues in mobile AI applications and leverages Apple’s advanced A19 chips designed for on-device AI. With over 900 million weekly active users, consumers increasingly prefer free AI solutions. Apple’s existing infrastructure and the new AI model could change the landscape for local consumer AI, potentially avoiding subscription fees and safeguarding user data.
