Ford’s $5 Billion Electric Vehicle Initiative
Ford Motor Company is investing $5 billion to launch a new range of affordable electric vehicles (EVs) built on its innovative Universal EV Platform. This pivot comes amid slow EV sales and the discontinuation of consumer tax credits. The announcement emphasizes a strategic shift despite previous cancellations of more expensive EVs.
The Universal EV Platform is designed for efficiency and lower production costs, with plans for a new electric pickup truck priced around $30,000 expected to launch next year. Additional models, including two- and three-row crossover SUVs and sedans, are slated for release by the end of the decade, targeting a range exceeding 300 miles.
CEO Jim Farley notes that this represents a significant transformation in Ford’s vehicle design, marking the most substantial change since the Model T. The initiative aims to position Ford competitively against lower-cost EV manufacturers, such as BYD.
