On August 1, 2023, Wall Street closed sharply higher, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching a record high of 53,178.41, up 1.3% or 693.38 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 2.1%, closing at 25,913.90, while the S&P 500 rose 1.5% to finish at 7,600.50. The surge was driven by a decline in crude oil prices, following the de-escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict, and strong economic data showing the manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for July at 55.6, exceeding estimates of 53.8.

Crude oil prices dropped significantly, with West Texas Intermediate futures down 5.1% to $80.34 per barrel and Brent crude falling 4.7% to $83.77. This easing in oil prices contributed to reduced inflation concerns and lower Treasury yields, benefiting growth sectors like technology. Over 19.36 billion shares were exchanged, with advancing stocks outpacing decliners at a ratio of 2.62-to-1 on the NYSE and 3.01-to-1 on the Nasdaq.

AI stocks also rebounded, with major players like Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft seeing increases between 4.6% and 6%. The overall market sentiment was bolstered by positive economic indicators and the easing of geopolitical tensions.
