BlackBerry’s QNX Division Expands Innovations in Automotive Software
BlackBerry Limited BB has made notable moves to grow its QNX division through new initiatives and projects. Recently, QNX rolled out an innovative automotive software solution designed to simplify and enhance the digital cockpit development process. The company is also increasing support for developers to foster innovation in embedded software across various sectors. Additionally, QNX has joined forces with Microsoft MSFT to expedite the development of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) utilizing Azure Cloud services. Their collaboration, alongside Vector and TTTech Auto, aims to transform the vehicle software landscape.
These announcements garnered a positive reception from investors, leading to an 11.14% increase in BB’s shares, which closed at $4.09 on January 6.
In line with its renewed focus, BlackBerry recently rebranded its IoT division to QNX, a decision influenced by feedback from customers, partners, and employees.
Exploring the BB-MSFT Partnership’s Impact on the Auto Industry
The collaboration between QNX and Microsoft aims to assist automakers in developing, validating, and refining cloud-based software to advance the transition to SDVs. As part of this partnership, the QNX Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0 will be integrated with Microsoft Azure, offering automakers a robust environment to foster innovation while minimizing risks during development. Future plans include enhancements to the QNX Hypervisor and the QNX Cabin.
BlackBerry has introduced the QNX Cabin, a groundbreaking framework that allows original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to virtualize digital cockpit development in the cloud. This cloud-based model allows developers to “shift left,” enabling them to create, test, and optimize code before deploying it on production hardware. The approach promotes collaboration among teams, speeds up workflows, simplifies procedures, and shortens time-to-market. The QNX Cabin also streamlines mixed-criticality development by merging safety-critical systems with consumer applications running on Android Automotive and Linux.
QNX will showcase its complete suite of automotive solutions at CES 2025 from January 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where it will also demonstrate the capabilities of SDP 8.0 on Azure.
QNX Everywhere Project: Empowering Developers
The QNX Everywhere initiative offers free access to QNX SDP 8.0 for students, schools, researchers, and hobbyists. This initiative includes resources and on-demand training opportunities to help aspiring developers enhance their skills and create innovative solutions. Participants receive a complimentary QNX SDP 8 license, a quick-start image for Raspberry Pi 4, as well as access to open-source ports and tutorials related to embedded software and operating systems.
Looking ahead, QNX Everywhere plans to expand partnerships with educational programs, organize developer events, and increase the availability of resources like source code and pre-built software to support developers globally.
Collaboration with Vector and TTTech Auto for Automotive Innovation
Automakers face growing challenges in developing and managing sophisticated vehicle software platforms. In response, QNX has partnered with Vector and TTTech Auto in a multi-year global effort to create a fundamental vehicle software platform. This initiative aims to reduce the costs and complexities associated with software integration, allowing automakers to concentrate on delivering innovative applications that enhance consumer loyalty and brand value.
This collaboration leverages the strengths of each partner. QNX and Vector will work together on the vehicle software platform, combining their expertise in secure operating systems and automotive middleware. QNX’s reliable OS is widely recognized and utilized by OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers around the world.
Moreover, this initiative signifies a transition from a traditional value chain to a value network approach, fostering open, transparent, and collaborative governance. The platform will evolve through contributions from new ecosystem members and open-source projects, thereby enhancing its overall value proposition.
