Gates Foundation Portfolio Insights
The Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, significantly influenced by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, remains heavily concentrated in value stocks. Notably, three stocks—Berkshire Hathaway (28.5% of assets), WM (17%), and Canadian National Railway (13.3%)—account for approximately 59% of the foundation’s marketable securities.
As of Q3, the foundation holds 21.8 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway, valued at approximately $11 billion, thanks in part to annual donations from Buffett. WM, with 28.9 million shares worth around $6.6 billion, maintains a dominant position in waste management through its extensive landfill portfolio. Meanwhile, Canadian National Railway has seen revenue growth of 2% year over year, with a current holding of 51.8 million shares valued around $5.1 billion.
The foundation’s strategy highlights the importance of investing in companies with durable competitive advantages and stable cash flows, positioning it for long-term growth as Gates plans to donate most of his remaining wealth over the next two decades.
