After a hiatus of about five years, Boeing (NYSE:BA) made a significant milestone on Saturday as it delivered the first 737 Max 8 to a Chinese airline. This act signifies a reopening of a major aviation market to the U.S. aviation giant.
Amidst much anticipation, China Southern Airlines took delivery of the plane on Wednesday following its flight from Boeing Field/King County International Airport in Seattle. The journey included stops in Hawaii and the Northern Mariana Islands before reaching its final destination in Guangzhou, which is located in southern China, according to FlightRadar24 data.
In an event that marked a turning point, China was the first country to ground Max jets in 2019 after two fatal accidents in Indonesia and Ethiopia. However, last month, the country’s aviation authorities granted permission for Boeing (BA) to resume deliveries of the 737 Max 8 to domestic customers.
Meanwhile, in a separate issue, the 737 Max 9, a different model of the plane, faced a temporary grounding in the United States following a midair crisis on an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon.
