Boeing Subsidiary Liquid Robotics Secures $25 Million Defense Contract with Japan

Liquid Robotics, a subsidiary of Boeing, has secured its first significant defense contract valued at $25 million to deliver 20 unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) to Japan. The contract, reported on [specific date], marks a milestone for the company, as it is the first time Liquid Robotics has appeared in the Pentagon’s contract awards list, which covers contracts of $7.5 million and above.

The Wave Glider USVs, capable of long-duration autonomous missions, have seen their price nearly triple since Boeing acquired Liquid Robotics in 2016. Initially priced at $300,000, the current value of each unit exceeds $830,000. Despite the contract being a relatively small figure within Boeing’s annual revenue of $89.5 billion, it signals a profitable venture for the defense contractor.

These vessels are designed for over-the-horizon surveillance and can operate in challenging environments for up to 12 months. This development highlights the strategic move by Japan to enhance its maritime capabilities through advanced robotic technology.
