Joint Venture for Affordable Electric Vehicles

Amid fervent efforts to make a dent in the electric vehicle (EV) market, rumors are swirling about a formidable partnership between Honda Motor Co Ltd and Sony Group Corp. The supposed alliance, rumored to be under the moniker Sony Honda Mobility, is purportedly gearing up to unveil not just one, but three EV models by the latter half of the 2020s.

Three Models in the Pipeline

News of the collaboration suggests that a sports utility vehicle (SUV) is slated for a 2027 debut, with an “affordable” compact following in 2028 or thereafter. Preceding these, a sedan is anticipated to hit the market in 2025, pitting the conglomerate against industry stalwarts such as Tesla Inc.

Market Strategy and Pricing

Initially, Sony Honda Mobility had disclosed plans of exclusively launching the Afeela brand’s sedan EV. However, recent murmurs indicate an expansion with two more models joining the fray. To streamline production and minimize costs, all three models are set to share a common chassis. In an intriguing twist, reports claim that the compact model may measure up to the size of the Toyota Motor Corporation Corolla and Volkswagen AG Golf.

The joint venture seemingly intends to keep retail prices at a tantalizing level by forsaking select equipment and functions. The flagship Afeela Sedan, dubbed a “high-value-added EV,” is anticipated to carry a price tag north of 10 million yen ($66,413).

Financial and Operational Context

In parallel news, Honda’s recall of 750,114 vehicles in the US due to airbag concerns made headlines earlier this month. Despite this, no injuries have been reported. Furthermore, American Honda is eyeing robust growth in 2024, projecting sales figures of up to 1.3 million for the Honda brand and 150,000 for Acura.
