Berkshire Hathaway’s Portfolio Concentration

As of the end of March, Berkshire Hathaway’s stock portfolio, worth $263 billion, shows a significant concentration, with two-thirds of it held in just five companies. Apple leads as the largest position at approximately $58 billion, or 22% of the portfolio, followed closely by American Express at $46 billion (17%). Together, these two companies account for nearly 40% of the portfolio, with Coca-Cola, Bank of America, and Chevron rounding out the top five, totaling about 67% of the overall value.

Additionally, Berkshire Hathaway reported holding around $397 billion in cash and Treasury bills, which is greater than the current stock portfolio. Warren Buffett maintains this concentrated strategy, emphasizing the importance of deep understanding and commitment to the selected businesses over diversification.

Buffett’s approach to investment is reinforced by his belief that concentration can reduce risk through enhanced understanding and comfort with the economic characteristics of these businesses, allowing investors to hold through market fluctuations with confidence.
