Thriving in the EV Evolution

In the beginning, back in 1995, BYD Company Limited BYDDY was merely a battery manufacturer. Over time, it blossomed into China’s crowned king of EV sales, overshadowing the once-reigning champion, Tesla Inc TSLA. The ascendancy of BYD alongside rising stars like XPeng Inc XPEV, Li Auto Inc LI, and Nio Inc NIO mirrors China’s increasing dominance in the realm of electric vehicles.
Marching into the first quarter, BYD emerged triumphant, selling 626,263 new-energy vehicles, marking a 13% year-over-year surge. Within this impressive tally were approximately 300,114 EVs and about 324,000 plug-ins.
Recently, the Tesla rival reported a remarkable rebound: a 46% surge in sales after a slight slip during the initial two months of 2024. Additionally, BYD noted an upswing in exports, with new energy vehicle sales tripling overseas to 38,434 units and both plugin hybrids and pure battery EVs showing solid growth rates.
As investors await Tesla’s delivery figures, contrasts emerge. While FactSet analysts anticipate 457,000 vehicle deliveries from Tesla, Bloomberg analysts express concerns over the potential for Tesla’s first year-over-year decline in deliveries since the pandemic-tinged spring of 2020. Elon Musk’s cautionary note about slower growth in the current year seems to be materializing, with Tesla’s stock down by approximately 29% year-to-date.
Meanwhile, Nio accelerated with a 14.3% year-over-year rise, delivering 11,866 premium smart electric SUVs and sedans in March alone, a prelude to a first-quarter delivery of 30,053 vehicles.
Turning to Li Auto, the brand hit a significant milestone, witnessing a robust 52.9% leap in deliveries during the first quarter, totaling 80,400 units. Notably, Li Auto further solidified its standing by delivering 28,984 vehicles in March, culminating in an impressive 39.2% year-over-year increase that propelled them to reach an achievement of 700,000 cumulative deliveries by the end of March 2024.
XPeng successfully met its delivery expectations, with a notable 20% rise to 21,821 vehicles in the first quarter, aligning closely with its previously set delivery range of 21,000-22,500 vehicles. This achievement translates into a substantial 19.7% year-over-year growth. Notably, in March, XPeng soared with 9,026 deliveries, marking an impressive 98.6% jump from February and a robust 28.9% year-over-year increase. The collective efforts of Nio, Li, and XPeng resulted in approximately 132,000 vehicle deliveries during the first quarter, a remarkable 30% year-over-year escalation that underscores the Chinese trio’s formidable force in the global EV arena.
