The Canadian government has announced an investment exceeding C$850,000 (approximately $612,000) to fund 14 Indigenous economic development projects in Northern Ontario, aimed at enhancing the country’s critical minerals supply chain. Minister Patty Hajdu revealed the funding this week, which focuses on building capacity and engagement within Indigenous communities.
This initiative supports a broader federal strategy to develop critical minerals essential for low-emission technologies, such as electric vehicles and solar panels. The funding is part of the CMIF Indigenous Grants program, which promotes clean energy and transportation projects occurring on traditional Indigenous territories. Additionally, the government plans to launch the First and Last Mile Fund in the 2025 budget, with a total investment of C$1.5 billion over four years to further support Indigenous participation in critical minerals development.
