On Tuesday, live cattle futures increased by $2.12 to $4.55, with open interest rising by 8,650 contracts, indicating new buying interest. Cash trade began at $252 live and $395-$396 dressed in the north, while southern trade remained quiet, with light activity at $250-$252. Feeder cattle futures also saw gains, ranging from $1.50 to $5.37, with the CME Feeder Cattle Index rising by 28 cents to $369.62.
As of April 25, there are 1,416 active cases of New World Screwworm reported in Mexico, particularly 120 in Tamaulipas and 11 in Nuevo Leon. Florida has restricted cattle imports from six southern Texas counties due to these concerns, although no U.S. cases have been reported. Amidst these developments, USDA estimated Tuesday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 109,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 215,000 head—up 7,000 from last week but down 10,377 from the same week last year.
