Cattle Market Anticipation Builds Ahead of USDA Announcement

Live cattle futures rose by $1.00 to $1.50 on Friday, with Southern bids reported at $240 and Northern bids at $236-237. The Fed Cattle Exchange online auction indicated sales between $239-241 for 183 of the 1,250 head offered. Feeder cattle futures also experienced gains, ranging from $1 to $3.85.

The USDA is set to release its Cattle on Feed report, forecasting a 9% decrease in August Placements and an estimate of September 1 on-feed data down 0.9% compared to 2024. Thursday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter was estimated at 112,000 head, with a weekly total of 460,000 head, which is 34,579 lower than the same week in 2024.

Current futures prices include: Oct 25 Live Cattle at $233.400, Dec 25 Live Cattle at $235.575, and Sep 25 Feeder Cattle at $359.225.
