Cattle Market Shows Varied Trends on Wednesday

Live cattle futures experienced mixed trading on August 26, with August contracts declining by 60 cents to close at $241.825, while October and December contracts saw slight gains of 7 to 20 cents. Cash sales reported in the northern U.S. included $403 dressed, with live trade at $255. The Fed Cattle Exchange listed 1,520 head but recorded no sales, with bids at $253. Feeder cattle futures generally saw a decline of about 45 cents across most contracts.

In related market impacts, wholesale boxed beef prices dipped on Wednesday afternoon. Choice boxes decreased by $1.90 to $391.26, while Select boxes fell by $1.99 to $369.69, creating a Chc/Sel spread of $22.39. The USDA estimated a cattle slaughter of 110,000 head for Wednesday, bringing the weekly total to 324,000 head, which is consistent with the previous week but 34,718 head below the year-ago total.
