Live cattle futures rallied on April 26, 2023, with April contracts rising $3.27 to $255.95, as cash prices reached $256 at midday. The Fed cattle exchange auction reported sales of 517 out of 1,036 head offered, with prices between $256-258. In contrast, feeder cattle futures showed mixed results, with April up 27 cents to $372.35 and other contracts down up to $1.30.
Wholesale boxed beef prices declined, with Choice boxes down 94 cents to $387.96 and Select boxes at $387.94. The USDA reported federally inspected cattle slaughter at 109,000 head for Tuesday, bringing the weekly total to 215,000, which is an increase of 7,000 head from the previous week but still 10,377 head below the same week last year.
As of the latest APHIS update, there are 1,416 active cases of New World Screwworm reported across Mexico, including 120 cases in Tamaulipas and 11 in Nuevo Leon.
