Cattle Market Surge Tuesday Driven by Cash Demand

Live cattle futures saw significant gains on Tuesday, April 26, 2023, with prices increasing between $2.12 and $4.55. Cash trade reached $252 per live head and $395-$396 dressed in the northern markets, while southern action reported light trading at $250-$252. Feeder cattle futures also rose, with an increase of $1.50 to $5.37, and the CME Feeder Cattle Index moved up 28 cents to $369.62.

In related news, the USDA reported a federally inspected cattle slaughter of 109,000 head for Tuesday, raising the weekly total to 215,000 heads, which is up by 7,000 heads from the previous week but 10,377 heads below the same week last year. The wholesale boxed beef prices were mixed, with Choice boxes declining by 66 cents to $388.90, while Select boxes increased by 18 cents to $387.78.

Additionally, a Tuesday APHIS update revealed 1,416 active cases of New World Screwworm across Mexico, including 120 cases in Tamaulipas. Florida has imposed restrictions on cattle imports from six southern Texas counties due to these concerns, although no active cases have been reported within the U.S.
