Live cattle futures rose by 60 cents to $1.72 at midday, while early cash trade reported prices between $348-355 dressed in the North and $222-223 for live sales. The Friday Fed Cattle Exchange auction had no sales from the 1,696 head offered, with bids at $220. Feeder cattle futures gained $3.55 to $4.35, with the CME Feeder Cattle Index increasing by 9 cents to $337.07 as of September 23.
Wholesale boxed beef prices saw a decline in the Friday AM report, with Choice boxes up $1.97 to $378.09 and Select boxes up $3.15 to $355.25. The USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter for Thursday at 90,000 head, bringing the week-to-date total to 389,000 head, which is 31,000 head below last week and 77,607 head lower than the same week last year.
