Contract Variations and Speculation
The trading landscape for live cattle futures is experiencing a wave of fluctuation, with April prices soaring by 90 cents while other nearby contracts remain stagnant or slightly varied within 20 cents of unchanged. Recent reports indicate notable trades at $188 in the South and bids at $190 in the North on Thursday. On Wednesday, the USDA reported light cash transactions hovering around $186, insufficient to establish a clear trend for the week. Similarly, feeder cattle futures are teetering between positive and unchanged territory, with the CME Feeder Cattle Index strengthening by 39 cents on 3/19 to reach $251.41.
Traders are eagerly anticipating the upcoming NASS report on March 1 on feed numbers, aiming for a target of 11.79 million head—a 0.9% increase from last year if projections materialize. Estimates for February placements vary between 4.5% and 8.8% above February 2023 figures, while Feb marketings are anticipated to show a 3.8% rise compared to the previous year. The industry anxiously awaits the COF report slated for release on Friday afternoon.
