Cattle Prices Continue Upward Trend on Wednesday Afternoon

On Wednesday, live cattle futures rose between 27 to 95 cents, following cash trade that finished near $256-257 last week. The Fed Cattle Exchange online auction reported $256 sales for 307 head of cattle offered out of 752. Feeder cattle futures also saw increases, ranging from 92 cents to $1.47, while the CME Feeder Cattle Index dropped 21 cents to $375.33.

According to the Tuesday update from APHIS, there are currently 1,674 active cases of New World Screwworm in Mexico, with 126 cases in Tamaulipas near the US border. In addition, USDA reported a lower weekly cattle slaughter, with 202,000 head processed this week, down 13,000 from last week and 27,987 from the same week last year. Wholesale boxed beef prices saw a decline, with Choice boxes down $1.62 to $390.72 and Select boxes lower by 65 cents at $391.59.
