Cattle Prices Rebound as Market Gains Traction on Wednesday

On Wednesday, live cattle futures showed increases of $3.35 to $3.90, with cash trade last week ranging from $260 to $265. The Fed Cattle Exchange’s online auction had 1,008 head offered but recorded no sales, with bids at $255. Feeder cattle futures rose by $5.45 to $6.05. As of May 25, the CME Feeder Cattle Index stood at $371.49, up $1.36.

As of Monday, the USDA’s APHIS reported 1,970 active cases of New World Screwworm in Mexico, including 168 in Tamaulipas, 96 in Nuevo Leon, and 15 in Coahuila. The Crop Progress report indicated U.S. pasture ratings at 29% in the good/excellent category, steady from the previous week. Wholesale boxed beef prices also increased, with Choice boxes rising $4.02 to $396.92.

USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter at 111,000 head on Tuesday, totaling 112,000 head for the week, down 7,704 from the same week last year.
