Live cattle futures fluctuated, with prices ranging from a 22-cent increase to an 85-cent decrease. This week, cash trade prices across the U.S. were reported between $260 and $265. The Friday Fed Cattle Exchange online auction recorded sales of $259 on 104 out of 652 head offered. Feeder cattle futures showed a decrease of $7.72 to $8.60.
As of Wednesday, the APHIS update reported 2,014 active cases of New World Screwworm in Mexico, including 150 cases in Tamaulipas, 94 in Nuevo Leon, and 15 in Coahuila, with some cases near the U.S. border. The USDA is set to release Cattle on Feed data this afternoon, forecasting a 3.4% rise in April placements compared to the previous year.
Wholesale boxed beef prices showed a mixed trend, with choice boxes down $1.59 to $389.89, while select boxes increased by 64 cents to $386.29. The USDA estimated Thursday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 109,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 427,000 head, which is 47,733 head below the same week last year.
