Live cattle futures increased on Tuesday, with gains ranging from $0.10 to $1.20. The cash trade remains limited after last week’s sales of $260-265. Feeder cattle futures surged, closing up between $4.35 and $4.80, while the CME Feeder Cattle Index fell by $2.46 to $367.63 as of May 15. The USDA reported a cattle slaughter of 110,000 head for Tuesday, totaling 213,000 for the week—3,000 more than the previous week but down 23,103 compared to the same week last year.
Additionally, the APHIS update reported 1,889 active cases of the New World Screwworm in Mexico as of Monday. Key areas affected include 156 cases in Tamaulipas (seven within 82-96 miles of the U.S. border), 48 in Nuevo Leon (14 within 57-99 miles), and 15 in Coahuila (one within 72 miles).
