China currently controls approximately 90% of the global rare earth magnet production, which is crucial for various industries including robotics, electric vehicles (EVs), and defense systems. The U.S. government has responded to this strategic dependency by investing billions in developing alternatives within the country, with a deadline for defense contractors to phase out Chinese-origin rare earth materials by January 2027.

MP Materials, based in California, is the only American company capable of mining, refining, and manufacturing rare earth magnets at a commercial scale, accounting for more than 10% of global supply. The company recently received a $400 million investment from the Pentagon and has formed supply agreements with major corporations like Apple and General Motors.

Analysts forecast that global demand for rare earth magnets will triple by 2040, driven primarily by advancements in robotics and electric vehicles. This shift highlights an urgent need for secure supply chains as the potential for geopolitical tensions continues to impact access to critical materials.
