Chipotle Shares Surge as Morgan Stanley Upgrades Rating
On Monday, shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. CMG showed strong performance. Morgan Stanley MS upgraded the stock from equal weight to overweight and increased the price target from $65 to $70.
Key Resistance Level for Chipotle
Chipotle is currently testing resistance near the $55 mark. A breakout above this level could potentially lead to further gains, making it our Stock of the Day.
Historical Support Levels
The chart below illustrates that this resistance level was previously established as support in October, as well as in January and February. Notably, price levels that have functioned as support can transform into resistance, which appears to be the case here.

This transition occurred around the $58.50 level as well, where it served as support in November. In subsequent months, it evolved into a resistance level.
Investment Psychology at Play
This phenomenon is rooted in investment psychology. When investors buy shares at a support level and the price rises, they often feel validated. However, if the price drops below this support, many may reconsider their investment and sell to avoid losses.
Investors tend to hold onto losing positions with the hope of breaking even. Thus, when shares rally back to their initial buy price, they often place sell orders. A high volume of these orders can create resistance at a level that was once support.
The Potential for Breakout
If Chipotle shares manage to trade and hold above this resistance, it signals a ‘breakout.’ This development is significant; it suggests that the traders who initially created the resistance by placing sell orders are no longer in the market, having either fulfilled or canceled those orders.
With this excess supply removed, the conditions for upward movement are favorable. If new buyers enter the market, they could face challenges in finding shares to purchase. This scarcity might lead them to accept higher prices to attract sellers back into the market.
Chipotle could be on the brink of such a scenario, indicating possible upward momentum for the stock.
