Microsoft and Amazon: A Comparative Analysis
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) are ranked fourth and fifth among the largest companies globally, respectively. In Q1, Amazon’s AWS segment contributed 59% of its operating profits despite accounting for only 21% of total revenue, while Microsoft’s cloud division, Azure, grew 40% year-over-year. Microsoft reported an 18% revenue increase and a 26% rise in cash from operations, while Amazon saw a 17% revenue growth coupled with a 53% increase in cash from operations, primarily due to AWS’s performance.

Despite differing margins—Microsoft benefiting from high-margin software and Amazon navigating a low-margin retail model—analysts consider them solid investments. Amazon’s custom AI chip business is significantly growing, outpacing Microsoft’s relative abilities. As of the latest analysis, it appears Amazon holds a slight edge in terms of future growth potential.
