Could Apple Follow BlackBerry’s Path?

BlackBerry (NYSE: BB) has shifted its focus from smartphones to enterprise software and cybersecurity as it faced declining demand for its products. In contrast, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is experiencing concerns over its delayed rollout of new AI features for iPhones, prompting investors to wonder if it could follow a similar downward trajectory. This delay is particularly focused on the company’s Siri assistant.

As of the most recent fiscal year ending September 28, 2024, Apple reported $201.2 billion in iPhone sales, flat compared to the previous year and down slightly over 2% from two years prior. With around 1.4 billion iPhone users globally, questions arise about whether users will continue to upgrade or consider switching to competitors with more advanced capabilities.

Financially, Apple is in a stronger position than BlackBerry at its peak, reporting $93.7 billion in profit and $391 billion in revenue in its latest fiscal year, compared to BlackBerry’s $19.9 billion in revenue and $3.4 billion in profit in 2011. Despite concerns over innovation, experts suggest that Apple’s financial strength may allow it to recover and adapt without facing a fate similar to BlackBerry.
