Joint Venture Between SpaceX and Tesla Aims to Revolutionize Semiconductor Supply

Elon Musk announced a joint venture between SpaceX and Tesla, named Terafab, aimed at significantly expanding global semiconductor supply. The project, launched last month, has an initial budget of $20 billion allocated for its first facility in Texas, with projections indicating a need for an estimated $5 trillion to reach the desired scale.

Terafab intends to produce advanced 2nm chips, integrating all semiconductor manufacturing steps from design to testing. Although it seeks to alleviate production limitations faced by traditional manufacturers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), experts view the venture as unlikely to pose an immediate threat to TSMC’s market dominance, given the substantial resources and time required for establishing such capabilities.

Musk’s strategic partnership with Intel will provide access to leading-edge manufacturing expertise, although TSMC has emphasized that establishing new production facilities typically takes two to three years, with additional time required to ramp up production. Investors remain confident in TSMC’s growth forecasts, indicating sustained demand for its services.
