Amazon Holdings Among Hedge Funds: Analyzing Recent 13F Filings

At Holdings Channel, we’ve analyzed the latest 13F filings for the 12/31/2024 reporting period. Our review indicates that Amazon.com Inc (Symbol: AMZN) is held by 17 funds. When multiple hedge fund managers seem to agree on a position, it’s wise to examine their activities more closely.

However, it’s essential to note that 13F filings provide only a partial view of hedge fund strategies. Funds must disclose their long positions but are not required to report short positions. For instance, a fund could be bearish by shorting calls and simultaneously hold long shares of the same stock. Such discrepancies can lead to assumptions of bullishness based purely on long holdings, overlooking the overall bearish stance that might exist.

Despite this limitation, examining groups of 13F filings can yield valuable insights, especially when comparing different reporting periods. Below are details on the changes in AMZN positions from this recent batch of 13F filers:

Among these funds, only two increased their existing AMZN positions from 09/30/2024 to 12/31/2024. Conversely, two decreased their holdings, while 13 established new positions.

Looking beyond these specific funds, we aggregated the AMZN share count across all 7,981 funds that reported holdings at the 12/31/2024 period. We compared this total to the sum holdings from 09/30/2024 to evaluate how hedge funds collectively shifted their AMZN holdings. Findings reveal that funds increased their AMZN holdings by 332,860,359 shares, rising from 6,358,182,400 to 6,691,042,759 shares. This represents a share count increase of approximately 5.24%.
