Hedge Funds Show Increased Interest in IBM as of March 2025
At Holdings Channel, we have analyzed the latest 13F filings for the reporting period ending March 31, 2025. Our review revealed that International Business Machines Corp (Symbol: IBM) was included in the portfolios of 20 hedge funds. When multiple managers align on a particular stock, it warrants a deeper investigation.
It’s vital to note that 13F filings provide a limited view. Hedge funds are required to report only their long positions to the SEC, leaving short positions undisclosed. For instance, a fund might be bearish on a stock by shorting it while simultaneously holding a long position as it maneuvers around its overall strategy. As a result, the presence of long positions in 13F filings can lead to misleading conclusions about a fund’s overall outlook because it omits any short or bearish intents.
Despite this limitation, analyzing groups of 13F filings can yield valuable insights, particularly when comparing multiple reporting periods. Below, we examine the shifts in IBM holdings among these recent 13F filers.
In tracking the number of shares owned, we found that seven funds increased their IBM positions from December 31, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Conversely, seven funds reduced their holdings, while two new positions emerged.
Expanding our focus beyond individual funds, we aggregated the total shares of IBM held by all funds reporting on March 31, 2025 (from a total of 724 funds). This total was compared to the aggregate shares held back on December 31, 2024. We uncovered that funds collectively increased their IBM holdings by 4,106,942 shares, rising from 7,518,058 to 11,625,000 shares—an increase of approximately 54.63%.
