Analysis of Hedge Fund Holdings in US Bancorp for Q1 2025

Recent analysis of 13F filings for the quarter ending March 31, 2025, reveals that US Bancorp (Symbol: USB) was held by 11 hedge funds. When multiple hedge fund managers show similar interests, it often suggests a deeper investigation is warranted.

It’s essential to note that 13F filings provide only a partial picture. Funds are required to disclose their long positions but not their short positions. For instance, a fund may hold short positions against a stock while also maintaining some long exposure. Consequently, this long component appearing in a 13F filing might create an impression of bullishness, which could be misleading since the bearish aspects are not reported.

With this caveat in mind, examining groups of 13F filings can yield insightful information, especially when contrasting holding periods. Below, we look at the shifts in USB positions among these recent filers.

In terms of share ownership, 5 of the reviewed funds increased their USB positions between December 31, 2024, and March 31, 2025, while 4 funds reduced theirs.

Expanding our analysis, we aggregated the total shares of USB across all funds reporting as of March 31, 2025 (out of 3,650 funds analyzed). When compared to the USB shares held on December 31, 2024, we found a reduction of 7,791,939 shares, decreasing from 239,548,032 to 231,756,093. We will continue to monitor the latest 13F filings from hedge funds and provide updates on trends and insights derived from aggregate data. While individual filings can occasionally be misleading due to their long-only nature, examining the overall shift among groups of funds offers a clearer view and potentially valuable stock ideas, such as US Bancorp (Symbol: USB).
