Disney’s Lackluster Performance at the Oscars
Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) experienced a disappointing night at the 98th Academy Awards on March 12, 2023, winning only one Oscar out of 22 presented. The sole award was in the visual effects category for Avatar: Fire and Ash, marking a significant underachievement in the animated feature category where Disney accounted for 40% of the nominees but failed to win for the fourth consecutive year.
Despite its award shortcomings, Disney continues to dominate at the box office. In 2023 alone, it released the only three films that surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales, including Zootopia 2 and the latest Avatar installment. Disney has led the global box office for most of the past decade, illustrating that while it may have faced a critical setback at the Oscars, its financial power remains robust.
