Telsa Inc. CEO Elon Musk has alleged that he and his companies are being targeted by the U.S. government after his Twitter acquisition in October 2022.
What Happened: Venture capitalist David Sacks prompted a response from Musk, who claimed to have been subjected to a “relentless attack” following the removal of censorship on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, post the acquisition.
Musk expressed frustration, stating, “The public still doesn’t understand even a tiny fraction of the power of the censorship government-industrial complex.”
Reposting a tweet by Sacks, Musk seemed to sympathize with allegations against the Democrats for undermining “freedom of speech and freedom from political persecution.”
He went on to question, “How far will they go to stop me?”
He has also accused the Biden administration of using “regulatory harassment” to unfairly target him, supporting an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal.
Musk also appeared to agree with theories that a Delaware judge’s decision to rescind a $55.8 billion Tesla pay package was a part of the attacks against him.
In response, he has filed to move the state of incorporation of SpaceX and Neuralink from Delaware to Texas, urging other companies to follow suit “as soon as possible.”
He also expressed dismay at the fake news and censorship surrounding Tesla and himself, depicting the situation as “insane.”
Why It Matters: Musk has stood firmly against internet censorship, openly criticizing the U.S. government on multiple occasions.
In February last year, he condemned the Global Engagement Center as the “worst offender” of government censorship and a “threat to our democracy.”
Musk cited free speech as one of the main reasons for acquiring Twitter and iterated his stance as a “free speech absolutist,” refusing to censor Russian news sources on Starlink.
