Elon Musk is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) chip he claims will be “two to three times better” than Nvidia’s leading GPUs while costing just 10% of their price. Musk shared these ambitions during a virtual interview with Baron Capital founder Ron Baron, indicating he has the chip’s entire design conceptualized. The project, dubbed TeraFab, involves collaboration between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, and aims to establish the largest chip manufacturing facility ever.
TeraFab is set to address massive chip demands for both SpaceX and Tesla, with projections indicating that current manufacturing capabilities won’t suffice to meet future requirements. However, the road ahead presents challenges, as Musk’s team will need significant breakthroughs in technology and cost-efficiency to compete effectively with Nvidia, which continues to invest heavily in enhancing its own chip offerings.
Despite the ambitious plans, experts advise Nvidia investors not to panic, as Musk’s history includes over-promising on projects. While his vision poses a potential threat to Nvidia’s margins, the company is also expected to thrive, anticipating at least $1 trillion in sales by 2027, largely fueled by increasing demand within the AI sector.
