Tesla’s Robotaxi and Robotics Promises Under Scrutiny

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), has made bold predictions about the company’s robotaxi business, promising over a million robotaxis on the road by 2020. However, as of October 2023, Tesla has registered fewer than 500 robotaxis in Texas. Musk’s optimistic projections raise concerns about the company’s valuation, which stands at 12.5 times sales and 339 times earnings—significantly higher than traditional car manufacturers.

Additionally, Musk anticipates production capacity for one million of Tesla’s humanoid robots within five years, contributing to 80% of the company’s future value. Yet, limited data on the potential market for these autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots casts doubt on Musk’s forecasts, prompting questions about the sustainability of Tesla’s current market valuation.

As Tesla faces increasing competition, particularly from Waymo, which has expanded its robotaxi service, investors remain cautious about the timelines and actual revenues Musk has proposed.
