Exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, function similarly to stocks, but what investors are actually buying and selling are “units.” These units can be traded like stocks, but they can also be created or destroyed to meet investor demand. Our weekly monitoring of these changes helps identify ETFs experiencing significant inflows (more units created) or outflows (fewer units available). When new units are created, it necessitates the purchase of the ETF’s underlying holdings, whereas destroying units leads to the sale of those holdings. Thus, large inflows or outflows can directly influence the individual components present in the ETFs.
