Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) function similarly to stocks, where investors buy and sell “units” instead of “shares.” These units can be traded back and forth, and they can also be created or destroyed to meet investor demand. Each week, we monitor the changes in shares outstanding to identify ETFs with notable inflows (indicating many newly created units) or outflows (indicating many units destroyed). The creation of new units requires purchasing the underlying holdings of the ETF, while the destruction of units involves selling off these holdings. Thus, large inflows or outflows can also influence the individual components within ETFs.
