ETFs operate similarly to stock transactions, but investors deal in “units” rather than “shares.” These units can be traded like stocks and can also be created or destroyed based on investor demand. Weekly monitoring of changes in shares outstanding helps identify ETFs experiencing notable inflows, where new units are created, or outflows, where existing units are removed. The creation of new units necessitates the purchase of underlying holdings, while destruction typically involves selling those holdings. Therefore, significant inflows or outflows can impact individual components within the ETFs.
