**Inflation Update: Consumer Price Index Climbs in September**
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.6% in September, leading to an annual inflation rate of 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August. This increase surpassed economists’ expectations of 3.6%. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, saw a monthly rise of 0.3% and an annual increase of 2.6%, also exceeding forecasts. Notably, gasoline prices surged 9.1% in September, contributing significantly to the overall increase, with gas costs rising 34% year-over-year due to geopolitical factors.
This inflation data has led to heightened speculation about monetary policy changes, with traders assigning a 49% chance of an interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve’s October meeting, up from 22% prior to the report. The market reacted negatively, with all major indexes declining, particularly the Nasdaq, which dropped over 1%. Producers in sectors like shelter, vehicles, and apparel are also raising prices, while wage growth has stagnated at 3% over the past year, further stressing consumers.
