Amazon Explores New Growth in AI Chip Market

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is actively considering selling its custom AI chips, known as Trainium, potentially establishing a significant new revenue stream. According to CEO Andy Jassy, if this segment operated as a standalone business, it could reach an annual run rate of approximately $50 billion, with projections of over $100 billion in a few years.

Amazon’s AI chips are designed to offer superior price-to-performance ratios compared to traditional GPUs, making them attractive to AI startups as well as larger corporations focused on building internal AI systems. In addition, Amazon’s cloud computing segment, AWS, saw a 28% year-over-year increase in revenue, reaching $37.6 billion in the first quarter. The growth of this AI chip market could complement Amazon’s already diversified business model.
