NextEra Energy (NEE) reported a notable increase in electricity demand from AI-driven data centers, which accounted for approximately 30% of its 4 gigawatt (GW) backlog additions in the first quarter of 2026. In the second quarter, Energy Resources added 3.6 GW of renewables and storage projects, raising its backlog to nearly 35.1 GW, underscoring its capability to meet increasing electricity needs.
Energy Resources is currently engaging with 30 potential data-center hubs and anticipates this number to grow to 40 by the end of 2026. The company aims to develop between 76.6 GW and 107.6 GW of clean generation from 2026 to 2032 to align with rising demand from large-scale operations, targeting 15 GW by 2035, with an upside potential exceeding 30 GW.
FirstEnergy and PPL Corp. are also leveraging this growing demand, with FirstEnergy’s $36 billion Energize365 program and PPL’s pipeline in Pennsylvania potentially generating $10-$12 billion in additional generation opportunities by 2032.
