Rivian Automotive, Inc. (RIVN) and Uber Technologies, Inc. (UBER) have partnered to develop 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis, with initial launches scheduled for San Francisco and Miami in 2028, potentially expanding to 25 cities by 2031. The collaboration includes an investment from Uber of up to $1.25 billion through 2031, with an initial $300 million to be released upon regulatory approval and contingent on achieving autonomous development milestones.
Additionally, Uber is set to pay licensing fees for Rivian’s autonomous driving software. If successful, the partnership could lead to thousands of driverless vehicles operating across the U.S., Canada, and Europe by the end of 2031, with an option for Uber to purchase up to 40,000 more R2 vehicles starting in 2030. This initiative builds on Rivian’s recent $5.8 billion software agreement with Volkswagen, aiming to advance Level 4 vehicle autonomy.
