Uber Technologies (UBER) has announced a partnership with WeRide (WRD) to launch Spain’s first commercial robotaxi pilot in Madrid later this year. This marks their debut in the European market, with rides available via the Uber app. The deployment will begin with trained vehicle operators and aim to expand significantly, potentially adding hundreds of robotaxis as operational targets are met.

The initiative builds on existing services in the Middle East, where WeRide has successfully operated fully driverless commercial robotaxis in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Madrid rollout is part of a broader plan between Uber and WeRide to expand to 11 more cities by 2030, targeting the deployment of tens of thousands of robotaxis globally.

Madrid’s robust urban population and mobility demand make it a key market for this service. The rollout will utilize WeRide’s technology platform to replicate the successful operational model achieved in the Middle East, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive autonomous ride-hailing network.
