Ford Posts Strong Growth in Electric Vehicle Sales for 2024
Fourth Quarter Performance: A Notable Increase
Dearborn-based Ford Motor Co F sold 30,176 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter in the U.S., bringing its total EV sales for the year to 97,865 units.
Yearly Sales Growth: Nearing a Milestone
Although Ford’s annual EV sales in the U.S. fell short of the 100,000 mark, they still achieved a significant 35% increase compared to 2023.
Current EV Lineup: A Limited Selection
As of now, Ford offers just three electric vehicles in the U.S.: the Mustang Mach-E SUV, the F-150 Lightning pickup, and the E-transit van.
Best Sellers: Leading the EV Charge
The Mustang Mach-E was the top-selling electric vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2024, followed closely by the electric pickup F-150 Lightning. Notably, the Mach-E held the title of Ford’s best-selling EV for all four quarters of the year.
Sales Figures: Impressive Increases Across the Board
Ford sold 51,745 Mach-E SUVs over the past four quarters, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 27%. The F-150 Lightning saw a 39% increase with 33,510 units sold, while the E-Transit experienced a remarkable 64% surge to reach 12,610 units during the same period.
Broader Market Context: EVs vs. Hybrids
Despite these gains, electric vehicles comprised only 5.7% of Ford’s overall vehicle sales in Q4 and 4.7% for the full year of 2024. In contrast, hybrid vehicles made up 9% of the company’s total sales during the year.
Future Plans: Adjustments to the EV Strategy
In August, Ford announced it would cancel plans for a three-row electric SUV that was set to go into production in 2025. Additionally, the launch of a new electric version of the F-150 was postponed to 2027, although the company plans to introduce a new electric commercial van in 2026.
Looking Ahead: Upcoming EV Strategy Update
Further details regarding Ford’s electric vehicle strategy are anticipated in the first half of 2025.
