As of midday Friday, energy companies are leading sector performance, with shares up 0.6%. Halliburton Company (HAL) gained 3.4%, while Baker Hughes Company (BKR) rose 2.3%. The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) is also up 0.6% for the day and 5.89% year-to-date. Year-to-date figures show Halliburton down 14.45% and Baker Hughes up 0.16%. Together, HAL and BKR account for approximately 4.2% of XLE’s holdings.
The financial sector is the second-best performer, down just 0.4%. Ventas Inc (VTR) increased 2.7% and Welltower Inc (WELL) rose 1.3%. The Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) is down 0.8% for the day but up 8.87% year-to-date, with Ventas and Welltower showing year-to-date gains of 12.73% and 23.80%, respectively.
Overall, energy is the only sector up, while all other sectors, including utilities, services, and healthcare, are experiencing declines ranging from -0.4% to -1.3%.
